It would never occur to the ISJ eriotdial writers, but we put a price on student (human) safety all the time, we just never recognize that we're doing it.The prime example would be the speed limits on our highways. We kill 35,000 drivers and their passengers every year on our highways, with existing speed limits in the 65 to 75mph range. We could reduce that death toll by 99%, down to 35 deaths per year, by lowering the speed limits on our highways to 15 mph.But we reject that solution to the problem, simply because it would cost too much. We never put it into words, but we are actually saying that the price of saving those 34,965 lives would be too great.Railroad crossing fatalities are the same story. We kill several hundred people every year by train-car collisions at RR crossings. We could save every one of those lives by placing a human crossing guard at every crossing to enforce safety, but we don't do it because those several hundred lives are not worth the cost of the crossing guards.We put a price on human safety all the time, we just don't admit that that is what it is.
